Тарих таразысына назар аударар болсақ, ХХ ғасырдың аяғында жалпы Алматы қаласында саусақпен санарлық қазақ мектептері болды. Оның өзі зиялы қауым өкілдерінің, ұлт жанашырларының арқасында Алматыда №12, №86 қазақ мектептерінен кейін №62 қазақ орта мектебі өмірге келген. Ең алғаш гимназиямыз 1983-1984 оқу жылында №58 мектеп базасында ашылса, 1984-1985 оқу жылында қазіргі №144 мектепте орта мектеп болып ашылды.

1991 жылы 13 қыркүйекте Қазақ КСР Министрлер Кеңесінің қаулысымен №62 қазақ орта мектебіне, қазақ әдебиетінің майталман ақыны, сатирик Ш.Смаханұлының есімі берілді. Мектептің ірі қоғам қайраткері Шона Смаханұлының есімімен аталуы – жазушының осы білім ордасының ашылуына сіңірген еңбегіне берілген құрмет деп білеміз. 

1992-1993 оқу жылында мекепте жаңа үлгідегі салынған ғимарат пайдалануға берілген. 

1995-1996 оқу жылында мектеп №167 орта мектеп және №62 шетел (ағылшын, француз, араб тілдерін тереңдетіп оқытатын бағыттағы мектеп болып екіге бөлінген. 

1999 жылы 20 сәуірде мектеп шетел тілдерін тереңдетіп оқытатын арнайы мектеп мәртебесіне ие болды. 

2001 жылы 29 тамызда Алматы қаласының әкімшілігінің №2/151 шешімімен «Лингвистикалық гимназия» мәртебесін алды. 

2004 жылы «Жыл мектебі» байқауында ІІ орынды жеңіп алды. 

2008 жылдан бері «Ш.Смаханұлы атындағы №62 гимназия» деп аталуда. 

2010, 2011, 2012 жылдары қатарынан гимназия ұжымы дарында балаларды оқыту мен тәрбиелеудегі жетістіктері үшін алматы қаласы әкімдігінің құрмет грамотасына ие болды. 

2012 жылы «Үздік жыл мектебі-2012» байқауына қатысып, дипломант атанды. 

2010-2014 оқу жылдары 10 оқушы Алматы қаласы әкімінің «Үркер» төсбелгісімен марапатталды. 

2019 жылы 4 қазанда қалалық «Үздік педагогикалық ұжым» конкурсының жеңімпазы атанып, Алматы қаласы әкімінің дипломымен  марапатталды.

Елімізде орын алған жағдайға қарамастан биылғы 2020-2021 оқу жылында да гимназия үстаздары мен оқушыларымыздың жетістері жетерлік. Атап айтар болсақ қалалық, республикалық және халықаралық түрлі эссе және шығармашылық байқауларға 100-ден аса оқушыларымыз қатысып, оның 50-ге жуығы жүлделі орындарға ие болды. Оқушылар қашықтан ұйымдастырылған бірқатар қалалық, республикалық, халықаралық онлайн олимпиадалар мен байқауларға да қатысып, өз білімдері мен өнерлерін сыңға салуда.
